Give Your Graduate a Gift That Matters

In many homes, the ritual of tzedakah starts with a box, made in preschool with some combination of tissue paper, glue, paint/markers, and love. Of course then comes the Bar/Bat Mitzvah project, which is usually a bit more involved. But then what? What is the next step in a young person’s journey to learning and practicing the value of tikkun olam? How can we encourage our children — no matter their age — to be not just mensches but philanthropists?

Like most things, philanthropy is a skill that gets better with practice. So when considering graduation gifts, why not consider “giving” your graduate a Donor Advised Fund (DAF), housed at the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater MetroWest NJ (JCF)?

With a DAF, the graduate in your life will be empowered to suggest grants. This gift underscores your trust in them to make independent decisions and to support their Jewish community.

DAFs can be created for just $10,000, although many choose to donate about the same as a year of tuition.

When you establish a DAF, the assets are removed from your estate and don’t impact your ability to make cash gifts directly to individuals (including the graduate). In addition, you receive a tax deduction for the full amount of your contribution.

Because the DAF is housed at JCF, your Jewish values are shared with the recipient, who is welcomed into the JCF “family” of DAF holders, and receives regular communication and professional relationship management from JCF staff. They can stay connected to the fund electronically, regardless of where the future takes them. And having a DAF here “at home” can strengthen their ties to Greater MetroWest.

Your graduate may have questions about which organizations to recommend, how to evaluate various charities, and how to make the most of their philanthropy. JCF is here to guide them every step of the way as they become more comfortable with the empowerment and responsibility of philanthropic decision making.

Like the tzedakah box from preschool, having a DAF will help your graduate implement the practice of tzedakah, although in a much more sophisticated way. What better way to empower your young adult than by giving a Donor Advised Fund at JCF? To learn more, please contact Eileen R. Heltzer, development officer, at (973) 929-3039 or eheltzer@jfedgmw.org.

Welcome Scott Krieger, new JCF President…and thank you to Ken Heyman, former President

At the most recent meeting of the JCF Board of Trustees, we welcomed Scott Krieger as our new president.

Scott is a partner with the accounting firm Friedman LLP, specializing in real estate, nonprofit organizations, and information technology companies. In his more than 20 years of involvement with the Greater MetroWest Jewish community, Scott has been a dedicated lay leader. He is a recipient of the Julius & Bessie Cohn Young Leadership Award and a former chair of the Young Leadership Division. A loyal Super Sunday volunteer, he has also served as treasurer, vice president of finance, and UJA campaign chair. Since he joined the JCF Board four years ago, Scott has been an active member of the Grant Review Committee. Scott earned his bachelor’s degree at Rider University, and resides in Livingston with his wife and family.

At the same Board meeting we thanked Ken Heyman for his countless hours of leadership as JCF president for the past three years. During Ken’s term, JCF completed a merger with another community’s endowment department, reinvented our communications strategy, contracted with a new investment consultant. Since 2011 JCF also raised $100 million through the MetroWest Tomorrow campaign. Ken’s dedication never wavered, his passion was always evident, and his sense of humor stayed intact!

Thank you, Ken, for serving as JCF president these last three years. You have continued the high standards of your predecessors, and we look forward to your continued service on the Board.
