Federation Providing Assistance to Those Affected by Hurricane Sandy

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, partner agencies of Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ have increased direct services, and both agencies and Federation have been coordinating volunteer efforts for those in need. So if you need assistance or want to improve the lives of others, we can help.

For help with counseling, navigating FEMA applications, or otherwise managing after Hurricane Sandy, please reach out to either Jewish Family Service of Central NJ or Jewish Family Service of MetroWest.

In historic Central, call JFS Central at (908) 352-8375. They are receiving people in the Elizabeth office from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (Monday - Thursday) and 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (Friday).

In historic MetroWest, call JFS of MetroWest at (973) 765-9050 to make an appointment in Livingston or Florham Park. Both MetroWest offices are open for walk-ins from 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Jersey City office can be reached at (201) 604-9991.

Members of the Greater MetroWest community who have become unemployed due to the storm (or the challenging economic times) are encouraged to contact Jewish Vocational Service of MetroWest NJ (JVS) at (973) 674-6330, ext. 271, or send an email to Dr. Meryl Kanner, JVS supervisor of career counseling and placement, at mkanner@jvsnj.org. Their team of experienced, dedicated professionals provides individualized career counseling and job search and placement assistance in offices in East Orange and Whippany.

Many Ways to Help Victims of Hurricane Sandy

If you want to help, please consider a distribution from your Donor Advised Fund to Federation’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. The Relief Fund is being used to provide immediate aid to partner agencies and to assist community members impacted by the disaster, especially the frail and disabled. Based on preliminary projections, close to $300,000 is needed immediately – and that figure is expected to grow as the longer term needs become more clear.

Alternatively, consider donating kosher food, coats and other items, or volunteering directly to help those in need. Please bring items to the Federation offices in Whippany or Scotch Plains during normal business hours. There is still a need for:

  1. Kosher food, especially tuna, peanut butter, shelf-stable milk, rice, pasta, beans and baby food
  2. Baby wipes and diapers
  3. Gift cards to local supermarkets, gas stations, or Target, which will be distributed by each JFS to families in need
  4. Art supplies, to help children cope with loss and disruption
  5. Winter coats (needed by Friday, November 16) for distribution through JVS.

This has been a difficult time for all of us. Working together, we will recover, rebuild, and heal from this devastating storm.
